"We deserved to win" - Stephen Constantine

04-Jan-2016

Speaking to the media after his team defeated Afghanistan to clinch SAFF Suzuki Cup 2015, Head Coach Stephen Constantine reflected on the effort put in by his boys.

It's a great win. I'm happy for everybody connected to Indian football. It was a difficult game. Afghanistan are a very good side. I think the work is done by everybody on the field. They worked their socks off. To a goal down and then come back immediately, we showed great character."

He added he had nothing to prove to anybody when asked about the criticism he faced prior to the tournament.

"I have nothing to say to anybody. I have nothing to prove to anybody. I dedicate this trophy to India. I'm not a one man band. I want to dedicate this to the fans and Indian football. We have a lot of talent in the country."

He also said he believed India deserved to win and that calls for a penalty doesn't hid the fact that India created the better chances throughout the game.

"When I saw that their No.9 wasn't playing, for me that was a plus. They wanted to try and pick us off. They thought we would push everybody forward. But we have some experienced players. We knew what we were doing.I think over the 120 minutes, we created better chances. I really think we deserved this. You can stay here and say there was a penalty here, there was a penalty there. At the end of the day, we won and that's what counts."
